However, if you are new to Rob and Steve’s adventures, strap in and let the history, literature, and of course comedy take you away to exciting locales. Reality always catches up to them, and in Steve’s case, pulls them back harshly to it. There’s nothing half so provocative as the final moments of The Trip to Spain, which challenged its leads’ white privilege and came closer to the overtly political films speckling the CV of magpie director Michael Winterbottom (The Road to Guantánamo, 24 Hour Party People). They eat delicious-looking food, spar with one another, and there’s some serious location envy. Did the insults ever cross a line or get too personal? They each handle it in their own way, and seeing their progress though a journey that began ten years ago emphasizes the importance these trips have on them both as individuals and as a duo. In reality, I applaud that and celebrate it. Some of the impersonations will need subtitles for viewers less familiar with Eamonn Andrews and Michael Parkinson, but the sound of the Brydon Brydon farting while under attack with a massage mitt requires no translation. The series begins with a double-bill, and in this first episode, jokes about Aristotle’s Poetics are jumbled in with a Wales v Manchester debate and a “watery custard” dessert that looks a lot like something else.
